Ways that teachers are currently leading in my district is mostly through collaborative groups. We have PLC meetings weekly in which we share our knowledge and talk about the ways we are meeting students needs, or how we can intervene in their learning. I'm most familiar with what my social studies PLC is doing at my school to meet students needs. Over the past few years we've done a book study on UBD and researching best practices when it comes to teaching thematically. We are continuing our inquiry on how to provide students with the opportunity to have an online portfolio that can be shared from grade to grade show their reflections from the themes we've chosen and aligned from each grade level.
I think our evaluation process could use more teacher leadership. We are allowed to peer evaluate each other in our non-summative years of evaluation, but we have had little to no training on how to effectively evaluate other teachers. We could benefit by having some peer coaches as a part of our evaluation process, but it seems our district is not on board with that idea. On a separate note, the teachers at my school have started a pineapple chart to allow others to join their room and see teaching strategies in action. It hasn't taken off quite yet, but I feel like we are providing another opportunity at our school outside of the framework of the traditional evaluation system to learn new ways to reach our students and collaborate with others on effective strategies.
