A leadership role I'd like to take on is developing partnerships, I feel I have a good grasp on leading through inquiry, collaboration, and by teaching well. This article helped me see that there are benefits to partnerships that I hadn't truly considered in the past. When I think about the great teacher leaders I know of, they have partnerships with many different groups who help provide resources to them. My class isn't just a place that we spend 50 minutes a day learning in, it can be so much more if I can form better relationships to my community. Luckily, in the social studies, its easy to find ways to partner up with the community!
The steps I would need to take are to do some research to see what is out there as a resource for me to use. In my community there are groups that have typically shied away from partnerships with other teachers, like our local historical society. I have felt dismayed by that, but I also am hopeful that I can frame a partnership in a way that would sound beneficial to the other group.
I have reached out through my teaching mentor to the MN Historical Society, presenting at the History Center on inquiry strategies in the classroom, as well as helping give feedback on the new Oliver H. Kelley Farm rebuild and their new programming for field trips. This is a relationship I could build on, especially because my school and district is so close in proximity to their site.
